Different Risks-Different Treatments

Osteoporosis treatment is not the same for everyone. It all depends on your risk factors. Dr. Tori Hudson, N.D., a professor at the National College of Naturopathic Medicine in Portland, Oregon, first determines risk factors for osteoporosis and for heart disease before prescribing treatment. She evaluates a patient's risk on a scale of low, middle or high severity based on information she gathers from their medical history, lab tests, physical exam and a bone density test. She examines a women's body type, lifestyle and looks for the following osteoporosis danger signs: sedentary activity level, fair skin and blue eyes, high consumption of alcohol, cigarette smoking, insufficient calcium intake during pregnancy and breast feeding and certain medications or surgeries that encourage bone loss. Once these risk factors are determined, she uses the following stepladder chart to determine treatment.

For Low Risk Patients

  • Diet, exercise and stress management
    Nutritional supplementation
Botanicals For moderate risk patients, she adds
Natural or semi-natural creams (including natural progesterone and estrogen compounds derived from soy or wild yam)

For High Risk Patients

  • In addition to diet, nutritional supplements, she adds
Friendly conventional hormone drugs (e.g. prescribed natural progesterone)
Or, if needed, Unfriendly drugs (conventional hormonal replacement therapy)

Health care professionals have used natural progesterone cream since 1950's to help relieve the symptoms of menopause, hormone balance, bone support and PMS. It is a natural solution for women and an alternative to synthetic hormone replacement therapy, (HRT).
