Depression, Headaches Night Sweats and Mood Swings

Some women feel a deep depression, have recurring headaches, fatigue and mood swings with menopause. This could be directly related to hormone changes. On the other hand, these subjective complaints, part of what’s called “menopausal syndrome”, are sometimes blamed on hot flashes. Other symptoms that fit into menopausal syndrome include fatigue, insomnia, dizziness, palpitations and joint and muscle pains.

Dr. John Lee tested natural progesterone with his patients for over 20 years. He found that natural progesterone, without any estrogen could reduce the side effects of menopause and perimenopause, bring the endocrine systems back in balance, and bones could start to grow too Natural progesterone has been used for post partum depression since the 1950.  Dr. Lee found his patients had less mood swings, depression and headaches using a natural progesterone cream in a combined approach.

After thinking about menopausal syndrome and its connection to hot flashes, it all made sense to me. These symptoms aren’t a mystery. If you woke up in the middle of the night on a regular basis drenched in sweat from a hot flash, wouldn’t you have insomnia, feel tired and subsequently irritable, nervous and perhaps have headaches?.

As for menopausal depression, the research done on this symptom may be flawed and results vary from study to study. For example, age, not menopause, is frequently used as a marker in these investigations. A National Institute of Mental Health report showed that women 45 years and older actually suffered less occasions of depression than younger females. Synthetic progesterone was used in the study instead of natural bio-identical progesterone.

Otherwise, historically there are nervine herbs, plants that work directly on the nervous system, that can help restore your sense of well being and release stress. Some of these plants are oatstraw, passion flower and St. John’s wort. Siberian ginseng is an alternative, often used to soften physical and emotional stress and balance out your body.

Other plants, known more as female healing herbs, include wild yam, soy, dong quai and chaste tree berry. Dandelion root helps hormonal conditions since it works directly on your liver support.

Health care professionals have used natural progesterone cream since 1950’s to help relieve the symptoms of menopause, hormone balance, bone support and PMS. It is a natural solution for women and an alternative to synthetic hormone replacement therapy, (HRT).
